Hey yall. So a bunch of people over on Youtube were asking me how I improved in art. And so I figured, since its youtube...i'd make a video! Its broken into 2 parts, and they're both linked here. I do hope you enjoy them and maybe they will help you in your own journey.

Love yall and stuff!

Part 1

Enjoy~
I'm very honored and humbled to announce that I was featured on The Artorder! A site that I check and follow regularly due to the amazing content, features and tips. Its a great hub for any artist or creative as the content spans pretty wide! I HIGHLY recommend subscribing to it, especially if you are a fantasy illustrator. The creator was previously the art director for Dungeons & Dragons at Wizards of the Coast.

Thanks so much Jon Schindehette for featuring my video! I'm still speechless (well, almost, haha).

Check it out: theartorder.com/positivity/
The dust has settled and i'm finally back to making videos. I make motivational videos and also funny videos too. All relating to creativity. I hope you will check me out there. I'm going to be around there for a long time, and probably more involved than on here. If you want to follow me, please subscribe to my youtube channel. I post new videos every week:

Hi all. I'm opening limited time only-better-than-sketch kinda-fashiony portrait commissions. I'm usually pretty slow, but I've learned a way of painting (examples below) that allow me to work muuuch faster. I'm planning to do a commission a day (or 2, if its complex or requires extra research) from now until my girlfriend comes to Canada.

My girlfriend lives in Japan. The last time I saw her was over a year and a half ago, and shes coming here for Christmas and New Years!! I'm super excited, but I want to be able to go out with her, buy her a gift. All that romantic stuff, but at the moment, I hardly have enough money for food, to be quite honest... So thats why I want to work nonstop until she gets here, and do character portraits. I'm mostly going to be doing them in black and white, like seen in these examples- so if you like my color and figure I suck at b&w, hopefully this is a pleasant surprise for you, lol.

Anyways, portraits will be priced as thus:
$35 for B&W
Anything else- note me and we'll talk

Slots:
first come, first serve.

Samples

2</a> 3</a>

No full body for now.

If you know anyone who would be interested, please please please share this with them :)
These are DA only prices. I'll be charging a lot more off site (probably double, lol) so make sure to take complete advantage of me while the offers hot, loll! The things one will do for love...

Thanks all!

PS. I updated my print shop! Its almost christmas so, get in on this! Lol. I'll post when there are specials!!

And don't forget. Please share!
*I'm asking here because this is my oldest community. I've been with you all from the very beginning.*

Am I even having fun anymore? What is this?....
I was looking back through my gallery, looking at old popular pieces. And comparing them to new works. And one of the main differences was....I'm not having as much fun. I feel like, in the past, I was so excited to improve and just draw whatever popped into my head. But these days i'm worried.... I'm scared it wont look good, i'm scared i wont be able to add the work to my portfolio, I'm scared about being able to get work.

I look back and see how many times I changed styles. How many times I kinda dropped the ball. What was I looking for? What am i looking for now? What makes me happy...and why am I not doing it now? At this point, i'm technically better....but......

Technical has its ups, of course! But i'm missing something big. That excitement I had when I drew, its gone. To try something new, its gone... I've started to think in a formula. Like "do this first, then do that, then this and that" and I try to do pieces that way. Its so restricting and dead...

My community and friends here have changed a lot over the years. Most of my old watchers are long gone, and its probably due to all the changes. Guys, i'm so lost.

What should i do?
Havent done this in a while. Extremely bored. Talk to me...
Yo. Seage desuuuuuuuuu!
Aight aight, SO, I'm planning on streaming some gaming. Im planning on kicking it oldschool and playing some Ragnarok online, WITH commentary of course. Wondering if you guys would be interested, or do you have better games in mind? Keep in mind, i'm not interested in RTS or MOBA games. At all.

Follow my Twitch account if you have one: www.twitch.tv/seageplays/

As usual, I love you all. I'll update you with sessy art soon.

Hey everyone. Two requests today. First up is that I need assistance. I need the help of a fashion designer. I wont be asking you to create anything, I just need to talk to one about something. We can do that through notes here on DA. Shouldn't take long. Just some complications I'm having.

Second up is that I'm creating a Newsletter, thats going to act as my little behind the scenes blog. I created a mailing list, so if you would like to get on that, you can sign up here:  eepurl.com/ANpDH ;

I really hope some of you will sign up. Sorry i've been so quiet around here, but hey, life...

Anyways, I hope you're all doing well! Take care!

First Ever Contest!!!

Journal Entry: Wed Apr 17, 2013, 6:23 PM
Edit. Oh hey guys. It would help me a lot if you shared this contest with your friends. Its my first try at holding one, so, i don't really have much of a following of interested people. Also, i'm not really famous. If you could tell friends, that would help so much. Thanks everyone!

Just as the title says, i'm holding my first ever contest! All info is in the video. Hope some of you guys enter!!

Limited time Commissions

Journal Entry: Sun Mar 31, 2013, 1:52 AM
Happy Easter everyone :)

Its that time again. The time when my funds get dangerously low and I have to draw OC's.
Alright, you know the drill. I'll do a full character painting. It will be along the lines of a painted sketch, but I always do more work than I say I will. They will be $40CAD paintings. If interested, send me a note and we'll get it set up. If you know others who are interested, please let them know. Pretty low point right now actually, haha. Aw well!

Also, another way to help is to buy a print. Im selling them here: society6.com/seageart/

And here: www.inprnt.com/gallery/seage/

I'll add some more pieces to those galleries if you want me to.

Thanks everyone for your support as always.
And new video on Tuesday as usual.

Whats going on DA?

Journal Entry: Sat Mar 9, 2013, 7:43 AM
Hey guys, a general question for all of you who rememeber me.

Whats going on? I've been following new strict rules for myself and trying to produce work weekly for you here, but it seems like the more work i do, the less popular I get. But...if I remember correctly, the biggest spike in views I got was because I was uploading daily. So whats going down?

I want honesty here, because I want to be the best I can be. Is my work boring now? Is it getting worse? Am i uploading too much?

I also noticed that ever since I joined YouTube, some of my watchers avoid my work. Is that a thing too? Please let me know as I really don't understand.
I'm getting more and more popular and appreciated in other communities, but the one I grew up with, and the one I love...it feels like I have a few of my old friends still keeping me around, but everyone else is just looking right over me.

Now don't get me wrong, i'm thankful for every fav I get and every comment, so thank you! I just feel everything going backwards. I was on the rise for a while then bam, its like the majority of people stopped coming to my page all around the same time. I  would really like to know.

Thanks everyone!! TEAR ME APART, TELL ME WHAT YOU HATE!

I'm open to it all.

News News News

Journal Entry: Wed Feb 27, 2013, 10:38 AM
Hey all! Soooo as I said before, my new 'journal' expression hub is now on Youtube. Thanks all my friends who go over and watch them and support me. Really means a lot to me. I have a few announcements for this week though.

First off, I was featured in a magazine called FashionSeries.  The interview is out already (I sound a little more mean than i'm supposed to in there though, lol...) and a link to it can be found here: www.fashionseries.ca/post/4336…
I did a video that accompanied that feature, along with 3 pieces just for them, so go check that out . And i'll be posting the final images  in the next few weeks. Here's the video for that:

2nd, I was featured by our very own :iconthe-phoenicorn: and put on their blog! Which is super nice! Thank you again for the feature and the kind words :D I hope you will all check it out and take a look at the other people featured on their website. They also do reviews, which is awesome! So please, take a look! You can find my feature here: artfreck.blogspot.co.uk/2013/0…

And lastly, I just did my favorite video so far and I wanted to share it with you. You guys have been so supportive over my direction and really positive these days. I'm trying my best to give back to all of you. I hope you enjoy these videos. I'm actually going to be doing a quick tutorial (not a tutorial) based on a question I received, this week, so check that out. But yes, the video was on this picture:
Mikiru OC by HowlSeage

Now, don't misunderstand. These videos are not just timelapses with music. No, every Tuesday I upload a new video where I explore a new topic or tell a story. I hope they can inspire you or help you through some rough times. That is my goal. In this video, I also have another piece of news , but you have to watch until the end to find out! So please do check it out, and subscribe over there if you haven't. I'll never quit DA, but I want youtube to become part of the family too, haha.

And thats all for news. I love you guys. Thanks for sticking by me even though I kept disappearing and neglecting you! I will try to get better to deserve allll your praise :D!

Toodles,

Seage~

Not A Tutorial: Tutorial- but not really

Journal Entry: Sun Feb 3, 2013, 8:57 AM
Yeah, I promised I would make a journal when this was finished, and I'm not one for breaking promises, so here you go!! Hope you enjoy it! (And if you do, please share it around :) )

Its a timelapse of this painting, with a little talkie talk on top for you guys, to keep the boredom away!:

Journals Elsewhere - Youtube is up!

Journal Entry: Sat Jan 19, 2013, 5:58 AM
Hey again. I was really enjoying making journals for you. Sharing my opinion and having you guys challenge it with your own opinions and helping me to learn new things, or just vibe with those who agreed. It was and still is really fun! And thank you all for understanding my stupid brand of humor! I'm glad in surrounded by relaxed people who allow me to joke how I want to joke without instantly becoming offended, haha. Sometimes it's hard having an online presence, because even if you make a joke about yourself, someone is likely to take it as a personal attack on them, their friends, family, dog, lineage. And it just goes too far, lol. So thanks all!!

Now, the reason for the journal is to say im going to be "half" moving my journals to youtube. Every Tuesday I'm going to be uploading a new video discussing something that means something to me. Although, i'd love to hear any requests from you too, and I may make it into a video! In the video you can watch my painting process AND hear me speak about these subjects! Super awesome right? And they're weekly, unlike my journals. So I do hope you'll join me there and subscribe to my channel. I want this year to be about giving back and crappy jokes, so lets do this!! Here is my first video here:

More for You - tube + Society6 Store

Journal Entry: Fri Jan 11, 2013, 12:01 PM
**Important Update- Forgot to add that I now have a store on society6! I'll be updating it as I make new work, but a lot of my stuff will be available as prints. My account will be listed below!**

Guysss! I'm excited! Im actually busy over here! DOING THINGS!! I have so much new stuff in the works for everyone. I was reflecting in on myself and trying to understand how I work, and realised, the chances of me doing a written up tutorial or walkthrough is PRETTY low, because i'm lazy like that. But... i'm an extrovert. This means, I'm very comfortable talking and whatnot. MEANING....youtube. I would put this as a poll, but I don't care about the results, so....I wouldn't... put this as....wait....damn it >.>

Anyways!!! I've joined multiple websites this week, including instagram and behance (well i had an old page, just didnt use it!!) I hit 500 likes on my facebook page, and now i'm looking to expand more!!! I don't have the page made yet. But I already know what I'm going to be doing on there.

There is a very big project I will be running through youtube in the near future. Some of you have heard about this "secret project". This is not that. That is still continuing, but this will be separate! What I want this to be is a way for me to connect with you guys, and give some advice. I will be calling it "Art Tips & Life Blips". In these short videos, I'll be answering some questions, talking about art and relating them to daily life. I will also on occasion do a full walkthrough of work and explain it, but again, relate it back to life and my thought process instead of just telling you all which brush I used, and when I smudged. I think you will get more out of it this way.

I would be very appreciative if you had any suggestions for topics or any questions you would like to see answered and wanted to get involved! Theres no start date for this yet, but it will be soon. I have virtually everything ready to go, just need to...well..go.

Even if 5 people watch my videos, I'll be happy that I can help you. Its been a long time coming, but this is like my way of saying thank you. I've been apart of this community for years now, and I've grown here more than anywhere, if I'm honest with myself. Its about time to give back.

Alright, heres a list of my social networks! Add me on them if you're there!!:

Youtube to be annouced.

I got an Intuos4 - my opinion!!

Journal Entry: Mon Jan 7, 2013, 6:18 AM
Hey guys! I was saving this journal for Monday since, weekends, everyone is gone. Off enjoying the snow, or sun or whatever depending on what country you're in. And I wanted people to actually read this :D

So, I went out and got me the Intuos4, medium size!! First off, thanks to everyone who voted and responded to my journal! I really appreciate you taking the time out to give me your personal opinions on what you feel about the tablets! And now I'm here to share my own personal feelings, and also go into a little more depth based on a few things I've learned recently.

There are plenty of reviews out there that cover the basics of what this tablet can do, so I will not be getting into that here, what I WILL get into is...well, what words can I use to describe this? I guess...a more sensitive palette...

Recently I watched a documentary called 'Jiro Dreams of Sushi'. In this film, they show and document the life of a sushi master, and what goes into being a master at an extremely expensive restaurant. There is a LOT to be learned here, and I recommend this film to EVERYONE, so please watch it. But one thing that stuck with me was that he explains that he has a sensitive palette. He says "If I cant taste better than my customers, how can impress them?" (Or something along those lines). This line stuck with me. Its was all about the sensitivity of his taste-buds, which were one of his tools, as much as the clean sharp knife, the fresh handpicked fish and octopus, the perfectly cooked rice. His subtle taste-buds were among one of his fine tools used to create amazing sushi. How does this relate to us? Well, our sensitivity and our sight are our 'taste-buds'. It took 15 years to master the basics of sushi making, and after that, there was no ceiling...endless possibilities. This is the same for us. It takes time, and natural progression to truly understand what we're doing in art. Of course we study and practice different methods, but as we do this, our eye and our hand is becoming more sensitive. Which is why work done 10 years ago, where we bumbled and fumbled our way through, and art done yesterday look so different, even if we haven't 'studied' a day in our lives.

Now lets swing this around. I feel there is a progression, and people who answered my poll proved this to be true at least in some respect. For myself, I was feeling the limitations of my tools. People say that its not the tool that matters, and to a degree this is true, but tools CAN limit you. There is a reason a sword master polishes and sharpens their sword and keeps it in proper condition, even though they could slice you up with a butter knife. You need to respect and take care of your tools, and make sure they are of high quality. This is a must as a professional. Now, this is not to say anything about my skill as an artist, but just the level of subtlty which I have achieved, but I could actually feel the limitations. Now, lets do it again! Bring it back to FOOD!

If you or me were to go and eat steak made my a local restaurant, it cost $15, and we got a regular looking plate, some fries, maybe a few carrots and some epic bbq sauce on this baddy. Cooked just right, that steak is going to taste awesome! We'll just tear through it without a care in the world! Now say we go to a prestigious restaurant. We order the steak there. Instead, we get a TINY piece of steak. Its got garnish on it. Its in the center of the plate, which is super clean, and it looks like an art piece. On top of this, it costs $100. At this point in time, are we really going to taste the subtleties that maybe a foodie or food critic would taste? Probably not unless you naturally have a very sensitive palette. It takes training and time. You have to keep eating good quality foods and start to break down tastes in you mouth. This is the same as art. Will someone who is new to art, just got their first tablet, an intuos 5, know the difference between that and a bamboo fun? Other than having some cool nibs and extra buttons, and the fact that everyone else SAYS its better, no.... because they would not understand or appreciate the subtleties. They wouldn't sit there and make a super light stroke. Usually in the beginning, we ignore these things and go for more obvious blunt stokes and then later soften up. I did this too.

An Intuos is a professional grade tablet that isn't TOO expensive so many people have it. But I believe that if you DO have it, rather than upgrading to the new model every time it comes out, you should be working on pushing that tablet as far as it can go. You're probably not using much of its potential at first. I feel this is the problem with jumping in and buying the best of the best, you miss that step where you move up and truly understand the worth of what you're working with. Which is why in many disciplines, they force you to use a training version of whatever you are doing, for a long long time, before finally they place the real thing in your hands. Suddenly you understand and have a true, deep rooted appreciation for the mastery and subtleties of the real thing. Its the difference between a wooden sword and a katana. Learning to master the base, the beginning tool is sometimes necessary to truly mastering the more expensive, fancy tool.

What do you guys think? Do you agree with my point? Or do you have a different viewpoint to the whole thing? Let me know!

Thanks for reading!

Seage~

PS. Oh, I may make a blog soon, or a page on my website for my thoughts and journals like this. And soon after i'll be vlogging about it. I do hope you enjoy this!
